DescriptionNineteenth-century quilts for children were small versions of adult quilts. Children’s quilts were functional, practical items, and there were no specific colors or patterns associated with childhood. This crib quilt in the “variable star” pattern is believed to have been made in Ohio in about 1860. It is a rare example of an infant’s cradle-size piecework quilt.

Provenance[Stella Rubin, Potomac, Maryland]; purchased by MFAH, 1999.
