Object Type
DescriptionSyria and Egypt were prominent centers of metalwork production under the Ayyubid and Mamluk sultans in the 13th through 15th
century. The inscription, which was originally inlaid with silver, does not refer to a specific sultan, but its epigraphic style was established
during the reign of the Mamluk Sultan al-Nasir Muhammad, who ruled until 1341. The main epigraphic frieze reads: “Glory to our
lord the sultan, the wise king, the diligent, the just, the conqueror, the holy warrior, the defender, the protector of frontiers, the royal,
the perfect, the viceroy, the conqueror, the royal (officer of) al-Malik al-Nasir.”
ProvenanceVahid Kooros, Houston; given to MFAH, 2010.
