DescriptionThis figure, one of a set representing The Four Corners of the Globe, is a personification of Asia from a distinctly Eurocentric perspective. The figure’s rich robe refers to silk, while a burning censer in her left hand recalls the spices and incense that were so highly valued in Europe. The camel at her feet was Asia’s most commonly used animal attribute.
Provenance[Philip Suval, New York]; purchased by MFAH, November 3, 1986.
