DescriptionIn January of 1774, Bostonians tarred and feathered British customs official John Malcolm after he argued with and struck another man, George Hewes, in an altercation over the way Malcolm had mistreated a young boy. In this print, one figure seems to threaten to pour tea down Malcolm’s throat. On his hat, the number “45” refers to the newspaper published by British political provocateur John Wilkes, famous on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean for his struggles against unconstitutional authority. The other figure, holding a club, wears on his hat a large bow indicating his affiliation with the Sons of Liberty.
