DescriptionThis print satirizes the action of a group of women in Edenton, North Carolina, who in October of 1774 signed a pledge against tea and other British imports. The unflattering portraits suggest the contemptuous tone of the satire. An especially ironic element is the enslaved women who holds the inkwell that the others use to sign the pledge against the taxed articles that “Enslave this our native country.”
