DescriptionWilliam Cadogan Simes was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, the son of an English immigrant. He was apprenticed by his brother-in-law, Captain Martin Parry and afterwards established a silversmithing shop in Portsmouth. There he conducted his business in a manner not unlike that of the majority of his contemporaries. Local newspaper advertisements provide some insight into his business activities including lenthy listings of his offerings, a reward for silver stolen from his shop and an endorsement for the lates London silver polish.
