DescriptionFought near present-day Brownsville, Texas, the battle of Palo Alto was the first major engagement of the Mexican-American War.  United States officer Major Samuel Ringgold, an artillery tactics pioneer, received mortal wounds in the battle and became a hero in its aftermath.
Provenance[The Old Print Shop, New York]; purchased by Miss Ima Hogg, 1961; given to MFAH, 1969.

Inscribed below image: MAJOR RINGGOLD, MORTALLY WOUNDED / At the BATTLE of PALO ALTO, May 8th[th superscript and underlined, with two vertical dashes underneath] 1846 When the gallant Major fell, Captain Duncan offered to take charge of him. "No" replied he "you [have?] more important duties to attend to, / I shall be taken care of"
