DescriptionThe Battle of Brownsville during the Civil War took place in November of 1863 as Union forces sought to disrupt trade in cotton from ports along the Texas coast.  Union forces entered the city on November 6 and Confederate commander General Hamilton Bee ordered an evacuation.  This engraving of the scene appeared in the popular periodical Harper’s Weekly.
Provenance[The Old Print Shop, New York]; purchased by Miss Ima Hogg, 1959; given to MFAH.
