DescriptionFought near present-day Brownsville, Texas, the battle of Palo Alto was the first major engagement of the Mexican-American War.  United States officer Major Samuel Ringgold, an artillery tactics pioneer, received mortal wounds in the battle and became a hero in its aftermath.
Provenance[Kennedy Galleries, New York, 1958]; purchased by Miss Hogg; given to MFAH, 1969.

Inscribed below image: THE BATTLE OF PALO ALTO. / Which was fought by the American & Mexican armies, on the 8th[th superscript with two periods [..] underneath] May. The Americans proving victorious. Loss of the enemy 300 killed; / number of wounded not known. Loss of the Americans; 43 killed, 103 wounded. Duration of engagement, 5 hours.
