DescriptionThe back of this mirror is decorated with sphinxes with scorpion tails; both sphinxes and scorpions were thought to have apotropaic powers.
The Arabic inscription reads: “Glory, eternal life, dominion, splendor, honor, beatitude, strength, nobility, sovereignty, increase, felicity, and strength given to its owner forever.”

Inscribed in Arabic in Kufic script as a framing band:

Glory, eternal life, dominion, splendor, honor, beatitude,
strength, nobility, sovereignty, increase, felicity,
and strength given to its owner forever
