ProvenanceThe Princely Collection of Liechtenstein1; [London, W.R. Jeudwine, Old Master Drawings , 18 Nov. 1960, lot 16]; Claire Judah (1922-2017) 2 and thence by descent; [Edinburgh, Lyon and Turnbull, Five Centuries: Old Master to 19th-Century Art, 23 May 2018, lot 17]; William Elliott Doyle Collection, Houston, 2018-2022; given to the MFAH, 2022

1 According to the British Museum, the name “Liechtenstein” is a generic term “used for any works that come from the family collection of the Austrian Princes Liechtenstein,” which was formed in the late 18th/early 19th century. “The collection,” the British Museum states, “was dispersed after WWII,” with most of it being sold in tranches to the London art dealership P. & D. Colnaghi & Co., Ltd. It’s possible that Lot and His Daughters passed through Colnaghi before being sold by W.R. Jeudwine.
2 Claire Judah was born in Calcutta to a Baghdadi Jewish family. She was educated in England, and the proudest time of her life was when she worked as a codebreaker during the war at the famous Hut 8 at Bletchley Park. After the war she began collecting prints, paintings, and antiques. Added to those she acquired herself were a number she inherited from her mother and uncle.
