Distilling her practice to the most basic elements of the medium, Sheila Pinkel folded and unfolded a huge sheet of photographic paper and exposed it to a brief flash from a single light source. In this process, the varied surfaces of the paper’s sculptural form caught varying degrees of light. Then, Pinkel flattened and processed the paper in her darkroom, giving the final image its dramatic shading and sense of volume.
