Grillz—a type of elaborate jewelry worn over the teeth—were popularized by hip-hop artists in in the early 1980s. This flashy adornment symbolizes monetary status and a glimmer of danger in the public consciousness. Yet, Sheila Pree Bright’s photographs reveal the softer side of the men who wear grillz. To make each portrait, Bright asked her subjects to close their eyes and tell her about their favorite memory. During their retelling, Bright took their photo. The tender expressions she captures reveal the truth of the sensitive, unique men who choose this jewelry.
