1 Born in Rotterdam, Charles Albert de Burlet was an art dealer in Berlin and Bâle, mainly of old master drawings and prints. He first learned the trade by working at C.G. Boerner in Leipzig. He set up his own business from 1910 to 1912 in the hotel Adlon, Unter den Linden, before settling in Viktoriastrasse. When Hitler came to power, he left Germany and settled in Basel in 1934. His collector’s mark was made after Burlet’s death by his widow.

2 The scholar, Kira d’Alburquerque, confirmed the attribution.
