DescriptionEdward Chandler Moore’s “Moresque” pattern tea and coffee services are recognized at the earliest Islamic influenced design retailed by Tiffany & Company. Images from Moore’s sketchbook, dated November 1865, appear to be preliminary designs for elements of the service and are in turn related to designs in Owen Jones’s Plans, Elevations, Sections, and Details of the Alhambra (1842–1845). The “Moresque” pattern wares were displayed at the 1867 Paris Exposition Universelle, Tiffany’s first entry in an international exposition. For its entry Tiffany received a bronze medal. During the final quarter of the nineteenth century, American decorative arts increasingly reflected exotic influences with Middle Eastern and Asian designs becoming particularly prominent.
