DescriptionThe carafe features an engraved view of a Greek revival house built in 1856–57 by noted architect and master builder Abner Cook, who also built the Governor’s Mansion. Still extant and known today as Westhill, Frederick Chandler was the third owner and bought the house in 1863 or 1864. He first paid taxes on it in 1864. He is often designated as "Colonel" Chandler, though it is unclear whether he actually served in the Confederate forces. The tumbler features an image of the State Capitol and is engraved "Capitol Austin." The engraved images are likely after photographs of the Westhill residence and the State Capitol taken by the photographer Hamilton B. Hillyer (1835–1903).
ProvenanceDavid A. Cantwell, Houston; [David Lackey, Houston]; purchased by MFAH, 2019.
