Description

Figured flasks were produced in a variety of designs by American glasshouses between 1830 and 1860. Their broad range of imagery, including decorative, Masonic, historical, and pictorial, as well as their colors, explains why they have long held a special appeal for collectors. Miss Ima Hogg was no exception, and over five decades she acquired approximately fifty examples for the Bayou Bend Collection. A number of these flasks refer to a group of Mexican-American War heroes, including General Zachary Taylor, Braxton Bragg, and Major Samuel B. Ringgold, which, in turn, contributed towards her developing a display in the Texas Room window cases.

This scrolled flask is highly unusual in bearing a stamp for its maker—the prominent Pittsburgh glassworks Bakewell, Page and Bakewells. With its brilliant yellow-green color, it appears to be unique as the only example recorded in this distinctive tint.
