a few short weeks following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a
veritable city of demonstrators descended upon Washington to protest economic
inequalities and to continue King’s mission. The Poor People’s Campaign
constructed a makeshift camp, called Resurrection City, on the National Mall
and took up residence from May to June 1968. Charismatic young leaders such as
Ralph Abernathy, Reies Tijerina, and Jesse Jackson lived in the camps and
addressed the national press on behalf of the protestors. Photographers such as
Fletcher Drake recorded the campaign, adding another chapter to the ongoing
civil-rights story.
