DescriptionThe subject of the embroidery is the story of David and Abigail from the Bible (1 Samuel 25). Abigail greets David with bread and wine to hopefully prevent him from taking revenge on her husband, Nabal, who has insulted David. Abigail succeeds in placating David, but when she tells her husband Nabal, he is struck dead. David then marries Abigail. In depiction of this story, the important attributes of Abigail are the ewer of wine and the distinctive loaves of coiled-shaped bread.
