Object Type
DescriptionThis luminous silk textile attests to a vibrant weaving tradition in 19th-century Morocco. Moroccan-made silks of deluxe quality, like this one woven with metal-wrapped threads, were highly valued. This lustrous silk may be a type of hanging or curtain known as a khamiya, one of three gifts written into Moroccan marriage contracts.
ProvenanceAcquired by the present owner from a Virginia estate sale, 2009; [Francesca Galloway, 2019]; purchased by MFAH, 2020.
