Kōgan Gengei began his studies with Hakuin late in the master’s life. Following Hakuin’s death, Kōgan studied under Suiō Genro, the late monk’s principal disciple, as well as under other followers of Hakuin. Kōgan’s work displays a looser, more playful quality and has more in common with the work of Suiō than that of Hakuin.
