DescriptionAlthough
she would later break into the male-dominated architectural field, Lotte
(Charlotte) Stam Beese entered the Bauhaus, the revolutionary art and design
school in Dessau, Germany, in 1926 to study weaving. There, she also practiced
photography, adopting the freewheeling approaches that characterized Bauhaus
photography, such as the bird’s-eye view shown here, which records a tapestry
of her fellow student weavers gathered in a formation that attests to their
camaraderie and high spirits.
