DescriptionDieter Appelt studied with Heinz Hajek-Halke, a leader of German experimental photography after World War II, but was equally influenced by the conceptual artist Joseph Beuys’s performances or aktionen, as well as by his own training with the Deutsche Opera Berlin. His practice often incorporates a performative use of his own body and found objects to explore the temporal pause and abstraction of form inherent in photography. Appelt considers photography the culmination of his sculpture. He is not interested in explaining the object he depicts; rather, he explores sculpture translated into shadow and light, as in this pair of inverted photograms.
