DescriptionThough he later studied art and photography, Dieter Appelt first trained as a baritone and sang with the Deutsche Opera Berlin for nearly sixteen years. In 1979, he left the opera company and traveled extensively for three years in France, Italy, and Mexico. During two trips to Mexico, he became inspired by the epic story of the life of the Aztec mythological figure Quetzacoatl, about which he made a film and a series of photographs. This experience further developed his interest in prehistoric culture, mythology, and built environments, particularly the ruins of the Anazasi, or ancestral Pueblo peoples, in the ‘Four Corners’ region of the United States. Appelt constructed a cliff-dwelling structure mounted onto a rock face, which he left behind to become part of the landscape in the canyon of Oppedette, in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence region of France.
