DescriptionFrom 1846 to 1861, silversmith Lewis R. Broomall used the stamp “PURE AS COIN” on his wares, indicating the purity of the metal. During this time, many American silversmiths had not yet adopted the sterling standard for silver (925 parts pure silver per 1,000 parts of alloy), and instead used the standard of silver coins, which was usually approximately 90 percent pure silver.
