DescriptionThe popularity of Egyptian motifs on silver and other decorative arts grew in the United States during the 1860s as international attention followed the progress of the Suez Canal, which opened in 1869.  Gorham produced several Egyptian-inspired designs, including this one, called “Sphinx.”
