Sudek began making carbon prints in the late 1940s. A
complex, labor-intensive photographic printing process, carbon prints were
first developed in the 1860s. Although they fell out of popular use in the
early 20th century, Sudek was attracted to the process for its distinct
luminosity and rich densities. Carbon prints can appear in a range of tones,
from rustic ambers to deep greens depending on the type of pigment used in the
processing. For this photograph of the outside of his studio, Sudek chose a
warm-colored pigment, which echoes the warmth emanating from his home on a
snowy winter night.
