In 1927 Sudek moved into a small courtyard garden studio
where he lived and worked for several decades. The studio became a regular
subject and setting for his photographs, particularly during Nazi occupation
when Sudek could no longer freely photograph in Prague’s city streets. Although
he maintained the romantic lyricism found in his early photographs, by the
1940s, Sudek had left behind their hazy, atmospheric light and instead
emphasized greater precision and clarity. Photographed in his studio using
sunlight as his primary light source, these four still lifes are exquisite
examples of Sudek’s mastery of light, shadow, transparency, and reflection.
