British military officers including Lieutenant Colonel Henry Dixon were among the earliest photographers in India, using their cameras most often to survey the historic architecture and religious monuments of the land in which they were stationed. Here, Dixon depicted one of two shrines adjoining the 9th- or 10th-century Bhoganandishwara temple in southwestern India, a site renowned for its intricately carved decoration.
