DescriptionIn 1802, Massachusetts clockmaker Simon Willard received a patent for a weight-driven timepiece that was compact, dependable, and relatively inexpensive. Willard’s “patent timepiece” became very popular, with other makers producing their own versions of what came to be called the “banjo clock.”
Provenance[A. M. Adler, New York]; purchased by Miss Ima Hogg, November 11, 1961; given to MFAH, by 1966.
