DescriptionThis Chinese export porcelain plate, dating from the third quarter of the 1800s, exhibits the denser patterning and bright, overglaze enamel colors typical of that time. The pattern is known as Rose Medallion; this example belonged to Tennessee-born military officer Samuel Carter who sided with the Union during the Civil War and continued his service with the United States Navy for many years after the war had ended.
