DescriptionGeorge Washington once owned this Chinese export porcelain stand for a sauceboat. Decorating its center is the emblem of the Society of the Cincinnati, an organization of French and American officers who served in the American Revolution as well as their descendants. George Washington was among the society’s founding members and served as its first president general.
ProvenanceGeorge and Martha Washington; bequeathed to George Parke Custis, Martha Washington's grandson; bequeathed to his daughter, Mary Anna Randolph Custis, wife of Robert E. Lee; confiscated by the federal government; returned to Mary, daughter of Robert E. Lee, late 19th century; Elinor Gordon Collection, as of 1974; [Elinor Gordon Gallery, Villanova, Pennsylvania]; purchased by MFAH, 1998.
