DescriptionWith their rich colors and brightly painted decoration, these candlesticks might at first glance appear to be made of porcelain, but they are actually copper with enameled decoration. Enameling, the application of a thin, glass-like coating to a metal base, was not new in the 1700s, but found new popularity for decorating small objects like snuffboxes, needle cases, and candlesticks. Decorations on enamelwares could be hand painted, as on these candlesticks, or transferred by a process similar to that used for ceramics.
Provenance[Helen McGehee Antiques, Tuxedo Park, New York]; purchased by Miss Ima Hogg, September 30, 1961; given to MFAH, by 1966.
