DescriptionA medallion style quilt, such as this one, is characterized by a central motif that appears only once. A series of borders usually surrounded the medallion to complement and accentuate it. This particularly brilliant shade of red may be from a synthetic dye or natural "Turkey red" dye. Turkey red, named because it was originally produced in Turkey, was popular with quilters because it was colorfast. It predated the less expensive manufactured aniline dyes developed in 1856.
