[1] Marcelle Marquet (1892-1984) was the wife of the artist Albert Marquet (1875-1947). Although it is likely the work remained in the artist’s estate, the details of the acquisition of this work are not currently known.
[2] The catalogue for the 1962 exhibition “Les Fauves” at the Galerie Charpentier, Paris, lists the lender as “Collection Mme Albert Marquet-Paris.” For the present work, see cat. no. 82: “Sainte-Adresse (1906).” This painting was one of the five works by Derain listed in the catalogue that she loaned.
[3] Beverly Whitney Kean, art historian and actor (1921-2011). The exact date of acquisition is not known.
[4] The painting is noted as the property of Mrs. Beverly Kean in the 1973 sale as indicated for lot 66.
[5] Acquavella Galleries acquired the painting from the cited 1973 auction and sold to Mr. and Mrs. John A. Beck in 1973. [Information provided by Jean Edmonson at Acquavella Galleries to Julia May Boddewyn by email on November 15, 2024.]
[6] Conservation on the artwork necessitated the removal of the old stretchers and labels: The handwritten numbers “CA 6879” and “2” appeared on the former stretchers, along with numerous labels that are all evident in archival photographs on file. [MFAH object file-accessed by Robert McD. Parker, April 2024.] To date, the only remaining label is a printed label from the art packing and shipping firm “H. G. Ollendorff” with the handwritten number “2642.” The handwritten annotation “Ste Adresse” is still visible on the verso of the canvas.
