DescriptionThis glass butter dish, in a pattern today called “Westward Ho” but first named “Pioneer” by its manufacturer, was produced for a period of years just after the 1876 United States Centennial. The buffalo, deer, and log cabins decorating the body and the kneeling Native American figure forming the handle of the dish’s cover constitute a combination of highly romanticized images marketed at a time of aggressive westward expansion and settlement that devastated both Native American communities and the bison herds of the West.
ProvenanceMr. & Mrs. Oscar Glenn, Houston; given to MFAH, 1986.
