DescriptionThe armorial shield on the front of this pitcher represents Cadwallader David Colden and his wife, Maria Provost. One side of the pitcher bears the image of an American warship, identified on the underside as the Independence, the first ship-of-the-line—a heavily armed vessel designed to engage its enemies in broadside gunfire—commissioned in the United States Navy. On the opposite side is an image of a paddle wheel steamship, possibly in reference to Robert Fulton’s Clermont, the first commercially successful steamship. Colden was keenly interested in matters related to navigation and commerce, including the nation’s canal system; he was a friend of Fulton and wrote an account of his life. Colden’s varied political career included service as mayor of New York City.
