DescriptionOriginally built as a French merchant ship, the Bonhomme Richard, commanded by John Paul Jones, fought and won a famous engagement with the British ship Serapis on September 23, 1779, in the North Sea off the English coast at Flamborough Head. The battle was hard fought and cost many lives on both sides. Finally, the British commander, Richard Pearson, surrendered his ship. The Bonhomme Richard was so badly damaged that it sank after the battle.
