Description

The Powerful Hand is a prime example of Marta María Pérez Bravo’s reshaping of shared belief into personal ritual. Mining the folk traditions of Mexican and Caribbean Catholicism, Pérez Bravo reimagined the popular devotional image in which the fingers of a hand represent Saints Joachim, Anne, and Joseph, the Virgin Mary, and Jesus. In her version, the all-powerful hand of God becomes the artist’s hand seeking, she has said, to dominate the different powers in the art world, and each of her gallerists at the time is personified by a rag doll reminiscent of those used in Voodoo rituals.
