After moving to the United States in 1994, Eduardo Muñoz Ordoqui has made work sharing
his experience as a Cuban in exile. The Banishments series juxtaposes film
stills with mundane objects from the home and office. Here, an accordion file
partially blocks a television playing Mauvaise
conduite (Improper Conduct, 1984), a controversial film about the plight of
Cuban dissidents. The files silencing the bearded figure on screen recall the systematic
persecution of homosexuals and of people with alternative religious and
political beliefs in Castro’s regime.
