Eduardo Hernández Santos learned of George Platt Lynes, Robert Mapplethorpe, and other photographers of the male nude from friends who traveled outside of Cuba and brought back books and knowledge of a wider world of art and photography. A liberating two-month stay in Buenos Aires in 1994 revealed a world with greater horizons than what he experienced at home and had been taught to believe. From that point forward, art became part of a larger engagement for civil rights he knew to be possible and for a joyous, supportive community he soon found in the illegal parties and underground gay nightlife of 1990s Havana.
