From storage to auction blocks to softly lit museum walls, works of art travel constantly. As they travel, Louise Lawler photographs them out of their usual contexts. Here, she presents an Ellsworth Kelly painting waiting to be sold at Christie’s auction house in New York. Kelly’s large paintings, which explore the relationships between colors and shapes, look best on plain white walls. On an upholstered auction cart at Christie’s, however, this green canvas looks lost. A sales catalogue hanging from the cart prompts us to question whether money, taste, or the art itself determines the painting’s value.
