Description

Metaphor was a vital strategy for photographers of the 1980s and
1990s to camouflage the critical messages of their images, allowing them to
elude government censorship while responding to their situations on multiple
levels. In Eduardo Muñoz Ordoqui’s series Zoo-Logos,
the Havana Zoo becomes a distorted mirror of Cuban reality during the economic
crisis of the early 1990s, when essential goods like food and fuel became
scarce. The human resonance of a caged monkey, hand extended for an offering,
is palpable.
