DescriptionThough formerly attributed to Jacopo Robusti, called Jacopo Tintoretto, now scholars believe that this picture was painted by Tintoretto’s son, Domenico, since the figure types, the suspended poses with outstretched arms, and the schematic handling of the drapery are closer to Domenico’s painting style than to his father’s. It has been suggested that the bearded figure lurking in the background beside Christ’s head is a portrait of Jacopo—who was in his 60s at the time, which was very old by Renaissance standards—as a shadowy witness to the mocking of Christ.
