DescriptionJustus Suttermans was trained in Antwerp and Paris but in 1619 went to Italy. In 1620 he was named court painter to the Medici in Florence and occupied himself with portraits of the nobility for the rest of his long career. In this ecclesiastical portrait, painted on one of his trips to Rome, Suttermans combined a detailed physiognomy with a grandeur of the figure, shown full-length in his expansive cardinal's robes. A member of one of the most aristocratic and famous families in Florence, he was named a cardinal in 1608, at the age of 25, and became the Director of the Vatican Library shortly after this portrait was painted.
