DescriptionGarry Winogrand photographed art openings, zoos, airports, rodeos, political events, and grandstand entertainment throughout his life, but it was his treatment of the New York street that earned his reputation as a central photographer of 1960s American life, particularly his seemingly obsessive compulsion to photograph women passersby. In 1964, Winogrand traveled through the United States on a Guggenheim Fellowship, stopping for some time in Texas, where he would return a decade later to teach at the University of Texas. This photograph, taken at night in a Fort Worth diner, exemplifies his style of sardonic observation; the paired figures seem to interact as minimally as possible in the stagnant environment, lending an air of dispassionate alienation.
