Winogrand spent his career making pictures that highlight the peculiarities and
isolation of postwar life in America. During the early 1970s, he started
photographing women specifically, capturing them in various modes of everyday
life: on the street, in crosswalks and elevators, in cars and parks. “Whenever
I’ve seen an attractive woman, I’ve done my best to photograph her.” Although
these images provide a document of women during that era, Winogrand’s presence
can be felt in the pictures, at times making the women more hunted than
glorified.
