[1] Born in Rouen, Charles-Boulanger de Boisfremont was a Knight of Malta and entered the service of the King in 1787. After studying with Descamps, he left for America in 1793 and was successful with producing portraits. He returned to France in the 1800s via Africa and Italy and exhibited at the Salon beginning in 1803 where he became acquainted with Chaudet and Prud’hon. Prud’hon strongly influenced his style and Prud’hon bequeathed him many of the drawings and oil sketches. These works passed to Mrs. Power, born de Boisfremont, and after her death, were dispersed in a two-part sale in 1864 and works bequeathed to his son in 1870.
