DescriptionThis pair of dishes each bear the initials J. (or I.) S., probably indicating English potter John Simpson. He formed the relief decoration of pomegranates alternating with fleur-de-lis around a central tulip motif by pressing a clay slab onto a mold. To create the colors of the surface, he applied thin liquid clay called slip.
Provenance[Ginsburg & Levy, New York]; purchased by Miss Ima Hogg, March 8, 1960; given to MFAH, by 1966.
