In the 1860s and 1870s, aristocratic Victorian women created complex, imaginative, and often humorous photo-collages that mixed photography with drawing and watercolor. Some pages in the MacCorquodale family album present decorative floral or geometric surrounds for standard carte-de-visite portraits, while others present fantastic settings or trompe l’oeil compositions.
